Marina Shmotova
|
In 1987, Russian composer Sergey Berinsky - whose music is featured individually at the Classical Archives - founded a Club of contemporary composers in Moscow, as an alternative to the more formal musical "politics" of the Russian Union of Composers. In particular, it was aimed at performing works by composers whose music was otherwise shunned by the more established Union, and in general to present to audiences a wider variety of contemporary musical styles and techniques - with a focus on the more academic orientations. Following Berinsky's death in 1998, his widow and several disciples and friends, worked to continue the Club's mission.

Among Berinsky's disciples was Marina Shmotova, who currently serves as the Club's director. Among its recent accomplishments is a Grant from the President of the Russian Federation for its Young Composer's Project (2005).
Current members of the Berinsky Club include composers from throughout Russia and beyond, who benefit from the exchange of ideas as well as critiques from colleagues and listeners alike. Indeed, a key part of the Club's activity is the discussion forum that follows a performance, wherein the composer is invited to answer questions from the audience.
