Winston Choi

Pianist Winston Choi is currently a student of Ursula Oppens, in the Certificate of Performance Program at Northwestern University. He earned both his Bachelor's and Masters Degrees at Indiana University, where he studied with Menahem Pressler. Prior to his studies at Indiana, Winston was in the Young Performer's Program at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto (R.C.M.), where he worked with Marc Durand and Leon Fleisher.

Winston is the winner of numerous national and international competitions. Most recently, he won 1st prize in the Orleans Concours International (France). Included in this prize are recording contracts with two labels, l'Empreinte Digitale (distributed by Harmonia Mundi) and QudroFrame, as well as a number of concerto and recital engagements. Winston also received 1st prize in the Soloist Division of the International Krystof Penderecki Contemporary Chamber Music Competition. He is a two-time winner of Indiana University's Piano Concerto Competition, and the winner of such other competitions as Northwestern's Concerto Competition, the 2000 Indianapolis Matinee Musicale (grand prize), the 2000 Kingsville Piano Concerto Competition, and the 1999 Crane Festival of New Music Solo Performer Competition.

Winston performs frequently in solo recitals, and likewise as a chamber musician, and concerto soloist. He has been featured on radio for WFIU (Indiana) and WFMT (Chicago), in both live and recorded broadcasts. Winston had his Carnegie Hall debut in performance with flutist, Ken Chia. Other performances have brought him to Malaysia, Brunei, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and Poland. Orchestras he has been featured soloist with include the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra, the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the North Toronto Collegiate Institute Symphony Orchestra, the Indiana University Concert Orchestra, and the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra.

Winston is actively involved in the performances of contemporary music, playing in numerous new music festivals and conferences. In April of 1999, he performed "Post-Partitions," by Milton Babbitt, for the composer's induction into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has premiered dozens of new works and has had numerous works dedicated to him. Composers he has worked with include P.Q. Phan, Sven-David Sandstrom, Leslie Bassett, and Elliott Carter.
