Recently hailed by the Washington Post as a "true heroic pianist," Clipper Erickson has thrilled audiences with exciting and innovative performances since winning first prize at the Young Musicians Foundation Competition in Los Angeles at the age of 19. He went on to win top prizes at the Busoni Competition in Italy and the William Kapell Competition in 1986, and was a semifinalist at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow the same year. In 1989 Affiliate Artists chose Clipper Erickson to join its prestigious Xerox Pianists Program. As a member of this distinguished roster of emerging young artists he has performed with orchestras throughout the U.S. and has given performances in many different settings, expanding listening opportunities for varied audiences. Mr. Erickson was recently chosen for the roster of Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour. On his latest CD released in 1998 by DTR records, "American Journey," Erickson performs selections that evoke American places and experiences. American Record Guide writes: "A delightful disc...Clipper Erickson's playing has a winning vitality and exuberance...fresh and youthful." Of his affinity for contemporary music, the News and Courier wrote after his performance at the Spoleto Festival, "It takes a pianist of almost divine power to render this sort of music in intelligible form to an audience. Erickson was just such a pianist." In October 1998 he premiered "Without Borders," a monumental new piano work inspired by oriental weaving designs written for him by Allen Krantz. Clipper Erickson has been heard in recital at the Spoleto Festival USA, Chicago's Dame Myra Hess Series, Boston's Gardner Museum, the Kennedy Center, and the Phillips Collection in Washington, as well as in Indianapolis, New York, Philadelphia, France, and Italy. He has been soloist with the symphonies of Rochester, Oakland, Sacramento, Newark, Lehigh Valley, and Trenton, among many others. Clipper Erickson attended the Juilliard School of Music and received his Bachelor's Degree with Honors from Indiana University and his Master's Degree from Yale University. His teachers have included John Ogdon, Claude Frank, Jerome Lowenthal, and Artur Balsam. Mr. Erickson resides in the Philadelphia area with his wife and two daughters, finding time in his busy performing schedule to perform for the benefit of local charities. Clipper Erickson is a member the roster of Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour. PennPat awards grants to presenters in the Mid-Atlantic region to cover performance fees of roster members. Mr. Erickson's CD's including these selections are available from DTR records. American Journey features works by American composers evoking American places and experiences. It includes works by Dett, Roy Harris, Quincy Porter and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Woven Images is a selection of music by Allen Krantz, Mussorgsky and Harold Triggs that are inspired by the visual arts.
