Vyacheslav Krouglov
Vyacheslav Krouglov

Vyacheslav Krouglov, among the leading domra and mandolin players in Russia today, received his musical training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied both domra performance and orchestral conducting. Since graduating, Maestro Krouglov has pursued an active and successful performing career, particularly in Moscow, but likewise throughout Russia and abroad - including some 40 nations around the world. Maestro Krouglov has transcribed works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, Sarasate, Shostakovich, and many others into virtuosic arrangements for domra and mandolin; indeed, he has turned such masterpieces as Borodin's Polovetsian Dances and Sarasate's Zapateado into concert showpieces for the domra. Another interest of Maestro Krouglov is creating arrangements for domra and mandolin of Russian folk songs, as well as of melodies from countries around the world.

Beyond his work as a soloist, Maestro Krouglov leads several ensembles, including the Moscow-based Mandolina Quartet and the esteemed New Names of Moscow Ensemble - both of which are featured here at the Classical Archives.

Maestro Krouglov's success has brought him numerous awards, including being a laureate of the First All-Union Competition of Folk Instrument Performers (Moscow, 1972). In addition, he has been named a People's Artist of the Russian Federation. He is also the President of the Russian Academy of Folk Music, and is a Professor of Folk Performance at the Gnessins Russian Academy of Music. We are pleased to feature this talented performer here at the Classical Archives.
