The Verdehr Trio was founded by Walter and Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr in 1972, and has been in residence at Michigan State University ever since; they have likewise been in residence at Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. since 1998. Pianist Silvia Roederer has been with the Trio since 1998, when she replaced the group's original pianist, Gary Kirkpatrick. With the support of Michigan State University, the Trio has commissioned over 140 new works from some of the world's most prominent composers and has developed a new chamber music literature for the violin-clarinet-piano trio. To round out its repertoire with Classical and Romantic era works, the Trio has rediscovered and transcribed many 18th and 19th century pieces, and included them in their concert programs. The Verdehr Trio has led a very successful concert career, having performed in fourteen European countries, the former Soviet Union, in South and Central America, as well as Asia, Australia, and more than two-thirds of the US. The Trio has performed in such prestigious venues as the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Vienna's Brahmssall, the Sydney Opera House, London's Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room, the IRCAM Center in Paris, St. Petersburg's Philharmonic Chamber Hall, the Rudolfinum in Prague, and the Concertebouw Chamber Hall in Amsterdam. We are very pleased to feature this fine chamber ensemble here at the Classical Archives.
"The [Verdehr] Trio has earned an enviable reputation for championing new music which they have commissioned, played, recorded, and otherwise campaigned... The Verdehr Trio gives these new works wonderful performances."
Fanfare Record Magazine
"[T]hroughout the concert the Verdehr Trio played flawlessly, with the artistic alertness, sophistication and urgency that communicates the message of new music to even the most resistant of audiences."
